Belgium’s threat assessment body, the Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis (OCAM), is warning of a disturbing new form of violent extremism taking root in the country, nihilist extremism, a movement that doesn’t seek to build an alternative world, but to tear civilization apart entirely.
According to OCAM’s annual report, cited Tuesday by L’Echo and De Tijd, around ten cases linked to this anarchist surge were opened in 2025. Five individuals connected to nihilist extremism are already registered in OCAM’s database.
A Toxic Ideological Cocktail
What makes this movement particularly dangerous is its ideological incoherence — by design. It blends satanism, nihilism, far-right extremism, misanthropy, incel ideology, jihadism, and accelerationism into a single, corrosive worldview. Operating exclusively through online networks, the movement, globally inspired by neo-Nazi currents, actively glorifies violence, awarding “points” to members who push others into committing crimes or who share the most extreme violent content.
“Destroy Society So the Strongest Win”
OCAM Director Gert Vercauteren draws a stark distinction between this new threat and conventional extremism: “While extremists, left, right, or Islamist , pursue a utopia, nihilist extremism targets a dystopia. For them, mostly young people, the goal is to destroy society in order to create a more anarchic one where the strongest prevails.”
Unlike ideological movements that recruit around a cause, nihilist extremism recruits around destruction itself. making it harder to detect, harder to counter, and uniquely appealing to alienated, radicalized youth.
Internet Providers Must Step Up
Vercauteren is clear: internet service providers can no longer look the other way. The online infrastructure enabling these networks to recruit, reward, and radicalize must be confronted head-on. In a threat landscape already crowded with jihadist and far-right dangers, Belgium is now contending with an enemy that has no ideology to negotiate with, only chaos to deliver.
