Man, 38, arrested after memorial to former prime minister in Parliament Square spray-painted with ‘free Palestine’
The statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Parliament Square has been defaced with pro-Palestine graffiti.
The words “free Palestine” and “Zionist war criminal” were written across the statue of the former prime minister in Westminster on Thursday night.
Churchill’s statue, which was cordoned off following the incident, has been regularly targeted by Left-wing demonstrators in recent years.
During the Black Lives Matter protests in 2020, protesters sprayed the statue with graffiti, crossing out his name and writing “was a racist” on the plinth.
Last year, trans rights activists climbed on to the memorial while waving placards and flags in protest against the Supreme Court’s ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
Churchill’s legacy has been revised over recent years, with some academics and activists claiming he was a racist imperialist.
The Metropolitan Police has been approached for comment.
