Federal prosecutor’s office investigating suspected terrorism in Ticino

The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) confirmed to the Keystone-SDA news agency that it had taken over the criminal proceedings opened against the person in question by the Ticino public prosecutor’s office.

According to medical findings, the accused person is neither fit for questioning nor to stand trial, the OAG further explained. He had been forcibly committed to a psychiatric facility. As a precautionary measure, the Office of the Attorney General has applied to the competent compulsory measures court for pre-trial detention in the event that the accused’s condition should change.

Further investigations will focus on clarifying whether there is a terrorist motive behind the crime committed in Bellinzona. The investigations are being carried out by the Federal Criminal Police (FCP) on behalf of the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, the OAG media office added.

According to several media reports from Ticino, the woman allegedly threatened the staff in the cell phone store in question with death and repeatedly shouted “Allah Akbar”
