During a political rally in Roubaix on Saturday, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, launched a verbal attack against the “Nous vivrons” collective, which had previously denounced what it sees as the antisemitic record of LFI MP David Guiraud. Mélenchon referred to the group as “opportunistic individuals” who “move at the end of strings like puppets,” adding, “the puppet masters are elsewhere.”

His remarks, made to a supportive audience, sparked immediate backlash. Critics highlighted that this imagery echoes a long-standing antisemitic trope of shadowy figures manipulating public life, an idea central to 20th-century antisemitic propaganda, such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and Nazi-era media. The metaphor of Jews as puppet masters has been used historically to stoke conspiracy theories and justify hatred.

Although Mélenchon insisted he was criticizing political opponents who “discredit themselves,” his reference to hidden “string-pullers” was widely seen as stepping far beyond political rhetoric. Observers noted the danger of invoking such loaded symbols, especially in a context of heightened sensitivity around antisemitism in France.

Some commentators even suggested that Mélenchon had now “outflanked the far-right Rassemblement National” on the issue of antisemitic discourse. Social media users expressed alarm, with one asking rhetorically, “What is Mélenchon’s obsession with puppets?”

The “Nous vivrons” collective, formed after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, is an anti-racist civic movement focused on combating antisemitism and advocating for the safety and dignity of Jews in France. Non-partisan in nature, the group includes citizens, intellectuals, activists, and public figures. It frequently intervenes in public debates, including through demonstrations and symbolic actions, aiming to expose antisemitism, even when it comes from political leaders or those claiming to fight racism.
