A blast struck the synagogue on Rue Léon Frédéricq in Liège last March. Federal police have now issued a wanted notice to identify two men spotted before the attack.
The investigation into the bombing of the Liège synagogue continues to gain ground. More than two months after the explosion that tore through the entrance of the religious building on Rue Léon Frédéricq during the night of 9 March 2026, federal police have released a wanted notice targeting two men seen near the scene shortly before the attack.
At around 3:54 a.m. that night, an explosion blew apart the synagogue’s main entrance, causing extensive damage to the building and its immediate surroundings. No injuries were reported.
The federal prosecutor’s office quickly took over the case, pointing to possible signs of a terrorist act. Prime Minister Bart De Wever and several political figures condemned what they called an antisemitic attack.
A suspect arrested in Turkey
A suspect has since been arrested in Turkey in connection with the case. According to several leads in the investigation, the Iranian trail also appears to be strengthening as the inquiry advances.
A few days after the explosion, federal investigators analysed a claim-of-responsibility video attributed to a pro-Iranian jihadist group. The footage showed a man placing an object in front of the synagogue before the blast.
Judicial authorities remain cautious, however, about any direct links between this claim and the perpetrators.
Two men actively sought
In the notice released this Thursday at the request of the Liège investigating judge, detectives are now searching for two men who may hold key information.
The first is described as being of average build, with dark hair and a beard. He was wearing a dark coat, dark shoes and carrying a backpack.
The second is believed to be aged between 20 and 30, standing roughly 1.80m tall, with a sturdy build. He has dark hair shaved on the sides and a light beard.
