Amira Z., a pro-Palestinian activist from Nice and co-founder of the “Nice in Gaza” movement, was again placed in pretrial detention on Friday after appearing before a court in Nice in connection with new proceedings for anti-Semitic remarks posted on social media, Le Figaro reported. This imprisonment comes less than a year after her initial conviction and subsequent sentence of imprisonment, which was served under house arrest with an electronic monitoring bracelet.
The CRIF Southeast filed a complaint in October for “incitement to hatred” and “justification of crimes against humanity.” Despite a previous conviction in November 2024, Amira Z. allegedly continued to share the same antisemitic posts on X (formerly Twitter) that had prompted the initial legal action. In that first case, the activist had already served time in prison prior to her trial.
Arrested on Thursday and taken into custody, she was brought before the prosecutor on Friday. She requested a delay to prepare her defense, but the court ordered her remanded in custody, following the prosecution’s recommendations.
“We are pleased that she is being prosecuted again for this new cynical, shocking behavior which offends the Jewish community and all citizens,” reacted David Rebibou, lawyer for Crif Sud-Est, to Le Figaro.
Amira Z.’s trial is scheduled for January 27th. The activist will therefore remain incarcerated for just over two months, while pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue to be organized every week in Nice.
