The London Metropolitan Police has launched several investigations after menorahs installed in public spaces were vandalized in what are being treated as potential antisemitic hate crimes. The incidents occurred in multiple neighborhoods, including Notting Hill, Muswell Hill, and West Hampstead, as reported by Jewish News. These acts take place amid heightened concerns within the Jewish community following the antisemitic terrorist attack in Bondi Beach, Australia.

Superintendent Owen Renowden of the Metropolitan Police emphasized the seriousness of the situation. “This has been an extremely difficult week following the terrorist attack in Australia, and I understand how these incidents can add to the pain and distress,” he said, assuring the public that the reports are being handled “with the utmost seriousness.” Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that the incidents are linked.

The police are working closely with local partners, including religious leaders, and have increased patrols in the affected areas. Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

The Community Security Trust (CST), the UK organization responsible for the protection of the Jewish community, condemned the acts as “disgraceful and appalling.” The CST confirmed that it had received multiple reports of menorah vandalism this week. “The story of Hanukkah is one of light and hope. Jewish people must be able to celebrate this holiday without fear or hatred,” the organization stressed.

According to CST figures, antisemitic incidents in the UK have risen sharply since October 7, 2023, in the wake of the war in Gaza. In response to this surge, the British government recently unveiled a national action plan against antisemitism and pledged tougher law enforcement, particularly against speech and slogans targeting the Jewish community.
