A man rioted through Mainz’s old town. Among other things, he hurled anti-Semitic insults at a man and his grandson before police took him into custody.
A 64-year-old man hurled anti-Semitic and racist insults at several passersby in downtown Mainz on Friday afternoon (September 12), according to reports from the Mainz Police Headquarters.
The incident began around 1 p.m. at Gutenbergplatz. There, the man shouted anti-Semitic remarks at a 69-year-old man and his three-year-old grandson. He then continued on his way, shouting racist slogans at the customers as he passed an ice cream parlor.
After further verbal outbursts, a police patrol was able to stop the man at a bus stop on Schillerstrasse. During the stop, the 64-year-old denied the charges and shouted at the officers. Since he couldn’t be calmed down, the police took him to a police station. He appeared visibly intoxicated and stated he had consumed a bottle of wine. A judge ordered the man to be taken into custody, where he remained until 8 p.m.
The police were subsequently able to record the personal details of the witnesses from Gutenbergplatz.
