In a context of heightened tensions in the Middle East, France’s Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez has ordered an immediate strengthening of security around Jewish places of worship and religious gatherings ahead of the holiday of Purim.
In a telegram sent Sunday to prefects across the country and consulted by AFP, the minister called for increased vigilance “in light of the current international situation in the Middle East.” He requested the prompt implementation of reinforced security measures targeting synagogues, Jewish schools, community centers, and all events connected to the religious celebration.
The move comes amid escalating military tensions involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. Recent strikes and retaliatory actions in the region have raised concerns about potential security repercussions beyond the Middle East.
According to the Interior Ministry, security measures will be adjusted locally based on threat assessments conducted by intelligence services and law enforcement. These measures may include:
- Increased police patrols
- Greater visible police presence near sensitive sites
- Coordination with Jewish community leaders
French authorities emphasized that these steps are part of standard protective protocols activated during periods of international tension or major religious holidays. The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens and preventing any form of violence or intimidation.
